DundurnCastleTree

"We watched the sunset over the castle on the hill" ~ Ed Sheeran

Dundurn Castle sits on land known as Burlington Heights. The land was used extensively by the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Chief Reverend Peter Jones was born there in 1802. During the war of 1812 Burlington Heights was commandeered from an early settler Richard Beasly and became the location of a British Army Post. Because of it’s strategic and military importance during the war the Heights was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.

In 1832 the land owned by Richard Beasly was sold to Sir Allan Napier MacNab who hired Architect Robert Wetherell to build the 18,000 square foot, 40 room Dundurn Castle that was completed in 1835.

Once built, Dundurn Castle became famous all over the country for its grand entertainments. Sir John A. Macdonald and King Edward VII are among those who were entertained there.  Camilla Queen Consort of the United Kingdom is a direct descendant of Sir Allan MacNab and is the Royal Patron of Dundurn Castle. In the late 1960’s the Castle was renovated as a Canadian Centennial project and also designated as a National Historic Site.

Share in Hamilton’s holiday tradition and visit the neoclassical mansion for the first day of its Victorian Christmas this Sunday afternoon from 12 – 4 p.m. The  Garden Club of Hamilton has decorated the castle beautifully with cedar boughs, ribbons and dried flowers. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item to help stock the Good Shepherd’s pantry.

Pretty Winter House 2

Deck the Halls (just a little)

We all know that when you’re selling your home, you’re advised to stick to neutral tones, understate decor, and create a blank slate that potential buyers can see themselves living in. But what if you’re selling your home around the holidays? Do you really have to forego the holiday decorations you love for that “nobody lives here” vibe?  Find out the answer on my Blog – Click Here
