I’ve never tried a Mochi donut or even knew they existed until today. A Mochi donut is a cross between a North American donut and a Japanese Mochi. They’re made of 8 small balls connected to make a ring using either glutinous rice flour or tapioca flour. The design makes them easy to pull apart. Mister Donut popularized the ‘Pon de Ring’ in the United States in the 2000’s. They’ve been in Toronto for awhile now and were brought to Oakville by The Mochi Girls. The name Mochi means Sprout and Smart in Japanese. It seems to be a fitting way to describe the two young women who opened their shop downtown Oakville.
