   Meet Me In Oakville

Fun Events In And Around Oakville June 30-July 3/2022

Happy Canada Day Oakville, This Land is Your Land!

This Land Is Your Land‘ is a great song that makes me proud to be Canadian. Our vast country is incredibly beautiful. When I was young I had the opportunity to travel from coast to coast and I’m happy that I did. I can still picture some of the most breathtaking views as if it was yesterday.  Beautiful scenery that is stamped in my memory forever can be found on the north shore of Lake Superior as we travelled along the Trans-Canada Highway headed out west. I found this blog by Joseph S. Furey about his road trip that gives more detail as well as some Indigenous history of the land.    Click Here

Written by Woody Guthrie ‘This Land is Your Land’ has two versions; Canadian and American. I know the words to both but never knew the history behind the why. I just thought that Canada changed the lyrics up after it was released. It’s a fitting song for all of North America.

As the story is told, way back in 1953 Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger were blacklisted by the music industry due to McCarthyism and Guthrie’s song was banned from U.S. radio stations. While visiting Canada, Pete Seeger sang the song at Camp Naivelt, a Jewish summer camp near Brampton, Ontario. He asked members of the camp choir, who morphed into a group named the Travellers to take the song and run with it.

The Travellers changed the words, “From Bonavista to Vancouver Island, from the Arctic circle to the Great Lake Waters” they added a French verse and recorded the song in 1956. From there they performed the song on about 15 Canadian television shows and it became a huge hit. It wasn’t until 1962 that Peter, Paul and Mary released Guthrie’s original song in the United States. For Canada’s Centennial Year in 1967, Woody Guthrie released the Canadian Version see below and it became the Canadian Anthem that we all know and sing.

This year, why don’t we play the Canadian version on July 1st for Canada Day, then on July 4th switch over to the American lyrics

This Land is Your Land – Canada – recorded for the Centennial Year 1967 and sung by Woody Guthrie
