The Year of the Rabbit

Let the celebrations begin! Sunday January 22nd marks the New Year on the Chinese lunar calendar. According to the
Chinese Zodiac each new year is assigned to one of 12 animal signs. This year it’s  the year of the Rabbit

To be more specific, it’s been narrowed down to the Water Rabbit. The sign of Rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity in Chinese culture. 2023 is predicted to be a Year of Hope

Traditional ways  to celebrate Chinese New Year include:

  • Decorating with red. The colour red denotes prosperity and energy which wards off evil spirits and negativity.
  • Visiting graves of relatives on New Years Eve and making  sacrifices to ancestors
  • Sharing a reunion dinner with family
  • Exchanging red envelopes and other gifts
  • Setting off firecrackers and fireworks
  • Watching lion and dragon dances
